Money-saving rail tips for 16-25s
Practical ways to spend less on trains with a 16-25 Railcard — dodging the weekday-morning minimum fare, using Advance tickets, the 3-year card, Oyster, and the extras that come with the card.

At a glance
- Advance tickets get a third off and aren’t caught by the weekday-morning minimum fare.
- Travel after 10am on weekdays, at weekends, on public holidays or in July and August to avoid the £12 minimum.
- Under 24 and travelling for years? The 3-year card is £25 less than three 1-year cards.
- In London, add the discount to Oyster for a third off off-peak pay as you go.
1. Use Advance tickets
Advance fares get the full third off — in Standard and First Class — and the weekday-morning minimum fare doesn’t apply to them. If you know which train you want, an Advance ticket with your railcard is often the way to go. (First Class is only discounted when it’s an Advance fare.)
2. Dodge the £12 morning minimum
On Monday to Friday, journeys starting between 04:30 and 09:59 can’t be reduced below £12. You get the full third off if you:
- travel from 10am on a weekday
- travel at the weekend or on a public holiday
- travel in July or August, when the minimum fare doesn’t apply at all
- book an Advance ticket.
3. Pick the right card length
If you’re under 24 and will be using trains for years, the 3-year card (£80) is £25 less than three 1-year cards, according to the official site. If you’re not sure, the 1-year card is the safer bet — railcards can’t be refunded. See 1-year or 3-year.
4. In London, set up Oyster
Add your railcard to a registered Oyster card for a third off off-peak pay as you go and the off-peak daily cap. At the time of checking it doesn’t work on contactless. See London.
5. Renew on time
Renew online up to 30 days before your card runs out, so you’re never caught paying full fare while you wait for a new one. See renewing.
6. Forgot it? Claim it back
If you had to pay more because you didn’t have your railcard with you, train companies normally let you claim the extra back once a year, as long as you can show you held a valid card. See lost, stolen or forgotten.
7. Use the extras
The official 16-25 Railcard site lists partner offers for cardholders. When we checked (17 October 2026) they included:
- Gousto: 55% off your first box plus free delivery
- Readly: 3 months free
- cottages.com and Hoseasons: 5% off
- tastecard: 60-day free trial
- Virgin Experience Days: 20% off
- Railcard Theatre Tickets: up to 50% off
No end dates were shown, and offers change — check the official offers page.
8. Know the other cards
- 16 or 17? The 16-17 Saver gives half off, including Season tickets, in England and Wales.
- Students: Santander’s Edge Student account has included a free 4-year Santander 16-25 Railcard. Check the current terms first — the offer and the account’s conditions may have changed.
More in other railcards for 16-17s and 26-30s.
